Cluster Floor Planning & Power Estimator

As computing densities increase, power and cooling requirements are also rapidly increasing. The need to have an adequate location for a cluster and that location's ability to support any planned growth in the cluster are becoming more and more important. This online cluster estimator can provide some guidelines to help you adequately plan space, power and cooling needs for your Aspen Systems cluster.

Aspen Systems' standard rack sizes are: 42U & 25U. This is the amount of space where equipment can be mounted in the rack. Though larger racks may be available, the issue that then most often arises is moving the units within your facility. The dimensions of our racks are:

  • 42U = 24" wide x 42" deep x 79" tall
  • 25U = 24" wide x 42" deep x 52" tall

Make sure the rack size you select will make it through all doors, under all "EXIT" signs and, most importantly, in any elevators you might need to use.

The amount of equipment per rack is dictated by the rack size and chassis size of the equipment planned for each rack. Additionally, available power and power distribution within the rack may play a role in determining how much equipment can be placed in each rack.

To allow for adequate airflow, power distribution and network cabling, the Aspen Systems Cluster Estimator Utility allows for a 1/6U space between all units in the rack. We can work with you to create special configurations if either higher or lower density is desired.

If your cluster is using Myrinet and has more than 128 nodes, throughput considerations will dictate the topology and the equipment necessary to implement the network. A full Clos topology will provide a fully non-blocking network. The configuration of this network is dependent upon the number of nodes initially supported and upon how much growth is anticipated. Therefore, this cluster estimator utility cannot handle more than 128 nodes for a cluster where a Myrinet network is in use. If you require more than 128 nodes with Myrinet, please contact sales@aspsys.com, and we will work with you to provide space and power planning estimates.

Please note that this cluster estimator is meant only to provide approximate values to aid with overall planning for space, power and cooling requirements. The cluster estimator makes the following assumptions:

  • 16 Ports per KVM Switch
  • 24 Ports per 10/100/1000 Switch
  • 3000VA UPS for 8 nodes
  • 1400VA UPS for 4 nodes
  • 1/6U space between items in the rack

Please select the appropriate equipment type(s) and/or size(s) below and click the "Estimate" button to calculate the approximate requirements.
